When people think about school lunch, they have an image of the food crawling across their plates. We even see the news showing lunch to be non-nutritional. However, the lunch at Camdenton Middle School is above the stereotypical standards that the media makes school lunch out to be.
CMS has a great lunch, in taste and nutritional value. Every day at lunch there is a choice of fruit and veggies. Also, if you would like to find out what the contents of the school's food, you can ask the kitchen staff or use the district food service office.
Here are the nutrition facts of some of the most popular foods at CMS:
• Crispy Chicken Sandwich: It has 350 calories. This may sound like a lot, but its only 17.5 percent of a 2,000 calorie diet. The crispy chicken sandwich also has 30 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol, 700 mg of sodium, and 150 mg of calcium. It is made of a chicken patty and a bun. The twisted crust pizza has 370 calories, only 18.5 percent of a 2,000 calorie diet, 30 mg of cholesterol, 910 mg of sodium, and 60 mg of calcium.
• The twisted crust pizza is made out of pizza, a twisted crust, and 100 percent mozzarella cheese.
• The baked cheeseburger has 329 calories, 47.39 mg of cholesterol, 617.30 mg of sodium, and 204.30 mg of calcium, the cheeseburgers at CMS are made of 1 part 2.45-ounce Pierre brand beef patty, and 1 part Sara Lee whole wheat hamburger bun.
The lunch staff at CMS tries really hard to have foods that are nutritional and taste good. This is very hard to do in our society when fast food is a regular thing. A well-balanced diet is the goal at CMS. They do have some fun foods that aren't as healthy, but are given in moderation.
The nutritional values of our school's food are exceptional. This was in effect even before Michelle Obama's proposal of having healthier options in schools. Camdenton was so healthy that the only things that we had to cut were the grease soaking French fries that everyone loved but were probably the worst thing on the menu. Most of the children that I talked to didn't really care what the nutrition of the school lunches are. The adults that I talked to cared for our nutrition and the nutrition of the food that we eat every day. Good thing we children at CMS have well-minded adults looking out for us.
