Our Lake Today: Justin Bieber vs. One Direction

Five Boys, One Dream, One Direction

February 20th, 2013 by By Lauren Risner and Chloie Freeman, Camdenton Middle School students in News

It was a battle of the teen heartthrobs. A lot of students our age have a favorite between Justin Bieber and One Direction. To find which of the two were most favored by our peers, we took a survey of 200 students at CMS. The results show that One Direction won by 22 votes. The final results were Justin Bieber, 89 votes, and One Direction, 111.

However, CMS students had some reasons why they picked Bieber or One Direction. Here is what we found out.

Starting on The X Factor, One Direction has become one of the biggest boy bands of all time. They signed with Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Records, after being formed and finishing third in the seventh series of British television singing competition The X Factor in 2010.

According to our online research, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles are the boys behind this pop sensation. One Direction has already been nominated for 68 awards, and won 37. Their achievements include a "Brit" Award and three MTV Video Music awards. The boys have come a long way since The X Factor, and there is a lot more to look forward to in their singing career.

CMS student Kylee Compton said, "I am a fan of One Direction because their music has meaning, and they're not afraid to be themselves. They don't go with the crowd; they are an original group, and that's what makes them talented."

According to our online research, Justin Bieber and his mom, Pattie Mallette, started posting videos of him singing on YouTube for his relatives to see after he got second place in a local talent competition, Stratford Idol which took place at the Avon Theater. Manager, Scooter Braun, came across them one night. After watching a few of them amazed, he then worked as hard as he could to find Justin. He contacted Justin's great aunt, school board, and the Avon Theater until he finally got a hold of Pattie's number. She was very skeptical and didn't trust Scooter, but after talking for three hours he convinced her to let him fly them to Atlanta to meet and talk about Justin's future. He also got the chance to perform for Usher who introduced him to L.A. Reid who signed him to Island Def Jam records, our research found.

Bieber has come very far since then. He is the most followed person on Twitter, has won 86 of the 146 awards nominated for, and has over 40 million Facebook fans. He also co-manages the Canadian star, Carly Rae Jepsen. Bieber is now on his second tour, Believe. The North American leg sold out in one hour!

Justin Bieber is a world-wide phenomenon and though he lost our survey at CMS, his fan base around the world is incredible. Bieber is going to be around for a while.

CMS student Skylar Colyer said, "The reason I have this passionate feeling for this incredibly, astonishing artist is due to his indescribable talent, charisma, and the fact that he has the ability to make millions of Beliebers believe in themselves, including me."
