A hearing, scheduled for 4 - 6 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, Feb. 21, is designed to brief the community on the Missouri Department of Transportation's (MoDOT) plans to add a center turn lane to a portion of Highway 5 in Sunrise Beach.
The meeting will be held at the Hurricane Deck Elementary School in Sunrise Beach, and MoDOT personnel will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the project with those affected.
The widening project, which is scheduled for completion in 2014, will add a center turn lane to a mile-long stretch of Highway 5 from Jet Ski Road, just north of the Sunrise Beach Fire District building, south to Lake Road 5-36 near First National Bank.
No formal presentation about the $1.2 million project will be made, however MoDOT personnel will be present to answer questions and discuss the project with the public.
MoDOT engineer Bob Lynch said plans for the project are in the preliminary stage and department personnel are anxious to hear from residents and businesses that currently have access to Highway 5 in the project area. He said bid letting on the project is scheduled for later this year and all comments from the public will be taken into consideration and made part of the project.
The center turn lane project is separate from another Highway 5 widening project that will begin in July of this year.
In that project shoulders will be added to Highway 5 and sections of the roadway will be resurfaced from Versailles to Greenview.
At a cost of $6,425,514.61 the project is set to begin in July and take nearly all the remaining construction season to complete. The project includes resurfacing the existing roadway as well as the installation of four-foot wide shoulders on both sides of the highway from the Niangua Bridge at Greenview north to Gravois Mills and three-foot wide shoulders on both sides of the highway from Gravois Mills to Versailles.
Rumble strips will also be added to both the shoulders and the centerline of the entire stretch of highway. In addition to the Highway 5 work, that contract also calls for resurfacing of nearly three-miles of U.S. Highway 54 in Camden County.
Both the Highway 5 widening and center turn lane projects are separate from the ongoing $32.3 million project that will replace the aging Hurricane Deck Bridge with a new structure.
The current 1,000-foot long, 77-year-old Hurricane Deck Bridge is being replaced by a new structure that will have two, 12-foot wide lanes and 7-foot wide shoulders.
The new bridge is being built just three feet east of the old span by the American Bridge Company and although MoDOT does not anticipate any major interruptions to Highway 5 traffic during the construction period, there are occasional delays taking place while crews are working to add the bridge surface to the girders that were placed in the Lake earlier this year.
Once the new bridge is built and open to traffic by year's end, workers will begin dismantling the old bridge. The entire project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2014.
When the new bridge is built and the old bridge removed, MoDOT will have taken the final step in replacing four of the original bridges that carried U.S. Highway 54 and Missouri 5 across the various arms of the lake. The original two-lane bridge that carried Highway 54 traffic across the Grand Glaize Arm in Osage Beach was replaced in 1995 and recently updated to carry three lanes of traffic to serve both the Osage Beach Parkway and the U.S. Highway 54 Expressway.
The original two-lane bridges that carried Highway 54 traffic over the Niangua Arm of the Lake west of Camdenton and Highway 5 traffic over the Niangua Arm north of Camdenton were replaced in the early 2000s.
