Lake Ozark Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is pleased to announce that the Reverend Gary Mitchell has been called to serve as their minister. Rev. Mitchell and his wife, Nancy, who is an elementary teacher, are from Broken Arrow, Okla. They have been married for 31 years and have one daughter, Amy, who just completed her Master's degree and lives in Dallas, Texas.
Rev. Mitchell was ordained in 1998. He has been Associate Regional Minister for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Oklahoma since 2002 providing pastoral care to 39 local congregations. Other duties included Northwest Area Pastoral Liaison, Commission on Evangelism, and Commission on Faith in Action. He has planned and implemented the regional church summer ministry programs through the Commission on Children, Youth and Young Adults, and led midwinter retreats. In addition, he had the responsibility for Regional Assembly events and Clergy retreats.
From 1991 to 2002, he served 1st Christian Church of Midwest City, OK as Student Associate/Associate Pastor. He was the Youth Director at Mustang Christian Church, Oklahoma from 1987 to 1988.
During his ministry Rev. Mitchell has been involved in both District and Regional events, including Oklahoma Regional Youth Council, Camp Director, Midwest City CROP Walk, Week of Compassion, Mission Trips, Kids Against Hunger (Cherokee, Okla.), Joplin Mission (Joplin) and Souper Bowl of Caring. He has also been very active in his community as a school volunteer, PTA president, Habitat for Humanity, Hands of Angels Home Repair Program and Tornado Relief Programs.
Rev. Mitchell brings many gifts and abilities with his ministry. He plays guitar, sings and loves many types of music. As a local congregational leader, he has preached, counseled, planned and led church retreats. He makes hospital, nursing home and rehab facilities visits. He has coordinated children's, youth and young adult programming including Vacation Bible School, weekly youth programs, ski trips, mission trips (local and Mexico), wilderness adventures, coffee house experiences and other events.
When asked what he's looking forward to at LOCC, Rev. Mitchell said, "As we begin the new year together, Lake Ozark Christian Church is poised to move forward into new avenues of ministry, and I am honored to be called their pastor. This congregation has amazing people with gifts and talents to share, and I look forward to a future where our ministries together instill a safe and creative space for people from all over the area to experience God's love and to live into the Gospel."
Rev. Mitchell will begin his service on Jan. 1, 2013; however, he and Rev. John Yonker will both conduct the 10:30 worship service on Sunday, Dec. 23 as well as the Candle Light Christmas Eve service at 6 p.m. at Lake Ozark Christian Church.
