Even though catfish are at prime right now for catching, those crappie enthusiasts can still find some nice keepers at Lake of the Ozarks.

"With the high sun and heat, the crappie are feeding and resting in the shade," said Bill Cassidy, Osage Beach Bait & Tackle owner and award-winning fisherman. "I recommend fishing 12-16 feet down at condo docks. They are like a giant shade tree for crappie, and they are all there right now keeping cool and very hungry."

What are the crappie hungry for? Cassidy said even though some lures and jigs are working, what they want to most and biting on the most are minnows.

"All summer long, crappie have been biting best on minnows. It is the difference in giving me a bologna sandwich or a steak. I like them both, but I'd rather have the steak every time."

Cassidy said get some minnows, and use a split shot and gold hook. He added fishermen can literally go right down on top of the crappie and they'll bite.

Cassidy also said if anyone would like to call in with questions regarding outdoors, hunting or fishing during his Saturday morning radio show, "Outdoors in the Ozarks," from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on 1150 AM or 97.5 FM, call 573-302-7000.
