The Beacon of Hope Church in Osage Beach provided a mobile food pantry, brought by Central Missouri food bank of Columbia last week, to provide free groceries to people seeking help. The mobile food pantry was filled with about 10,000 pounds of food to serve the Lake Area.
The Beacon of Hope Church will host the mobile food pantry the first Tuesday of every month from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Items are distributed to anyone seeking help. There are no qualifications or specific eligibility requirements. Products are distributed on a first-come, firstserved basis.
A picture ID will be required for pickup, along with a Social Security card for each household who will be receiving the food. Upon arrival for the first time at the food pantry, individuals will be asked to fill out a small application.
Pastor Steven McQueen has been working with The Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri for the past several months to organize a food pantry for the Lake Area. McQueen said the food bank suggested the Mobile food pantry because the Beacon of Hope doesn't have the space in its facility to create a permanent pantry.
"Because of the economic turndown, people don't have enough money to make it to the next week, let alone provide food for their family," McQueen said. "If we could just help supplement them just a little bit. I know we are doing just a small part, but every little bit helps."
The church also runs a thrift shop inside the church that is open to the public with clothing priced at 50 cents.
The food bank has been sharing food and bringing hope to hungry people for 30 years. In 2008, the mobile pantry distributed more than one million pounds of food.
The food bank is one of the few nationwide that does not charge for the food it provides. Their food goes to soup kitchens, emergency food pantries, shelters for the abused and homeless, programs for low income children and senior citizens and rehabilitation centers.
The food bank is supported through individual donations, foundations and community partners. For more information about giving options or to make a donation, contact Development Director Bobbie Kincade at 573-474-1020.
The mobile food pantry will be back at the Beacon of Hope Church on March 1.
