Preparers needed for AARP tax program

The AARP Tax-Aide program is looking for volunteer preparers to help with its annual service.

For 15 years, the AARP has prepared the simple returns for people at the Lake for free, with special emphasis on seniors. AARP Tax-Aide volunteer preparer Laura Edwards stated in an email that AARP filing electronically at Lake began when volunteers like her went to IRS training for e-file.

“Seniors were very wary of sending returns electronically, and most were not able to do their own. That first year, I filed two returns-my own and one for a neighbor. That was the total AARP e-filing for the whole Lake Area,” she stated. “This year we filed around 2,000.”

Now, Edwards stated in the email that instead of one e-filing site, the program has five sites including Eldon, Laurie, Camdenton, Osage Beach Library, and Senior Activity Center at the Lake (formerly the Golden Age Center). AARP Tax-Aide will be held from Feb. 6 through April 10, specifically on Wednesdays at the Senior Activity Center at the Lake.

Edwards said the IRS provides the program with top-quality software, and AARP provides the training; together the IRS and AARP provide excellent support throughout the season. If a client has a problem outside the season, there always is an AARP supervisor who will help solve it, Edwards stated.

“Filing season is February, March and half of April. Preparers need some computer skills and are given basic tax training and resources to use through the season, (written and phone help),” she said in the email. “Most preparers work one day a week, for 8-10 weeks. AARP Tax-Aide provides us a chance to give something back to the community. The people are grateful, and we enjoy doing it.”

Edwards said they always welcome new volunteer preparers into the group. They have computers for volunteer preparers to use if they need one, and the program offers you great support at the sites.
