Save Blue Spring Creek committee schedules second informational meeting

The Save Blue Spring Creek committee has scheduled a second public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at McDonalds in Eldon.

On Dec. 18, a group of concerned area residents met to discuss the potential impact of the proposed Rocky Mount Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Plant. According to a news release issued by the Save Blue Spring Creek committee, after attending planning meetings of the Rocky Mount Sewer District, it was learned that the proposed treatment plant is to be placed on the Morgan/Miller County line and the treated effluent is to be discharged into Blue Springs Creek. Unlike the original reports have claimed, this effluent will not be treated to drinking water levels, nor will the treatment break down chemical additives or drugs flushed into the system, the news release stated.

Blue Spring Creek is a natural cold water creek that feeds into other tributaries and eventually into Lake of the Ozarks. Blue Spring Creek and its tributaries cross valuable farmland and are a source of fresh water vital to the health and wellbeing of wildlife in the area, according to the committee’s news release.

The committee has already gathered more than 960 names in a petition to be presented to the Department of Natural Resources, the Rocky Mount Sewer District and Shultz and Summers Engineering, Inc. A formal request has also been made to these groups for a hearing to allow the committee to present their concerns and discuss alternative solutions, the committee’s news release stated.

The committee is seeking additional input and support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Missouri Department of Conservation and anyone else concerned about the environmental health of this area.

The committee is also inviting any interested community groups or individuals to participate in the upcoming meeting or call for additional information. All are welcome to attend.

For questions or additional information, contact either of the committee’s chairpersons, Janice Imler at 573-392-1544 or Donna Skanes at 573-392-3829.
