Osage fares well in state wrestling tournament

Osage sophomore Chris Johnson brought home the fifth place medal from the Missouri State High School Athletics Association tournament last weekend in Columbia.

Johnson entered the Class 2 tournament with a No. 2 seed in the 120 weight class after taking second place at the District tournament the week before. He has been state ranked the entire season and finished with No. 6 spot for the 120 weight group in Class 2.

Johnson is a sophomore with a 40-11 record after last weekend. He won the opening round of the tournament by defeating Chris Algiere of St. Claire with a technical fall, outscoring his opponent 18-2.

After falling in the second round to last year’s third place finisher in the second round, Johnson won the next two bouts in the consolation bracket. He secured a medal position by pinning Reid Hanmore of St. Charles in under a minute.

After falling in the semi final round to Slade Stiles of Nevada by a 4-2 decision he won 5th place by pinning Hunter Smith of Mexico in 3:58.

Johnson’s teammate Kyle Carroll earned his trip to the competition by taking fourth place at districts in the 106 weight class. Caroll, a sophomore, entered the match with a 30-16 record and a No. 13 state ranking for his group.

Camdenton sent four wrestlers to the competition for the Class 3 title.

Anthony Franicevich earned his ticket with a district title for the 126 weight class and a No. 3 state ranking. The junior fell in the first round after being pinned by the eventual fifth place winner, Johnny Blankenship of Platte County.

Franicevich, who entered the tournament with a 38-7 record, won the next match in the consolation bracket by a 10-1 decision before falling to Staley’s eventual third place finisher, Jonathon Melton. He earned two points for the Lakers during his competition.

In the 106 weight class, junior Dillon Briscoe represented Camdenton.

Briscoe earned his spot with a 3rd place district finish. He entered the state competition with a 39-13 record and a No. 6 ranking amongst Class 3-106 wrestlers. He added four points to the Lakers team total with two wins in the consolation bracket before being eliminated.

Freshman Isaiah Hills took third place at districts to qualify for the state competition in the 220 weight class. He entered the tournament with a 31-16 record for the season.

Hills fell in the first round to a senior from Farmington, but won the next bout in the consolation bracket. He was eliminated from the tournament after falling to a Fort Zumwalt senior in his third match.

Trevor Casady took fourth place in districts in the 120 weight class and entered the state tournament with a 23-24 season record. The sophomore lost both matches, the second match to the eventual fifth place medal winner from Warrenton.
