Contract awarded for Hurricane Deck Bridge construction

A project to replace the Hurricane Deck bridge on Missouri 5 in Camden County is moving forward.

During its monthly meeting Wednesday, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a construction contract to replace the aging bridge, which is located just south of Sunrise Beach.

American Bridge Company of Overland Park, Kan., was awarded the contract after submitting the low bid of $32.3 million.

The new bridge will be wider than the existing span to include two 12-foot driving lanes with 7-foot shoulders on each side. The new bridge will be constructed on the east side of the existing structure.

Motorists will continue to use the existing bridge until the new one opens in late 2013.

Work is scheduled to start this spring, and minimal effects on traffic are anticipated during the construction. Some short-term, one-lane closures on Missouri 5 are expected as the new bridge is tied into the existing roadway just before the new bridge opens.

The entire project will be finished in spring 2014. The existing Hurricane Deck bridge was built in 1934.
