Dig out those secret chili recipes and join the Citizens Against Domestic Violence for a chili cook-off.
The CADV will host its Fourth Annual Chili for Charity Cookoff from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. March 3 at Tan-Tar-A Resort. Participants who want to enter have until Feb. 27 to send in a registration form and $50 entry fee.
The grand prize winner will be awarded $500, with $250 and $100 for second- and third-place teams. There will also be prizes for the team voted “People’s Choice” and “Best Team Theme.”
Teams may consist of one to four people and teams must prepare a minimum of four gallons of chili. No kitchen will be available on site, so teams should bring their own warming devices. Chili will be judged based on appearance, aroma and taste. All teams are encouraged to create a theme that is presented throughout all elements of your team (i.e. team name, dress, decoration of space, etc.).
The community is encouraged to attend. Admission is $5 per person and includes chili sampling, a cakewalk, face painting, children’s games, cash bar and musical entertainment by Dale Blue and Jackie Newton. Vendors featuring home goods and other items will be present at the event. Tickets will be sold at the door or can be purchased in advance at CADV in Camdenton.
Jeff McDonnell, Don Shay and Mike McDonnell of the St. George Episcopal Church in Camdenton made a batch of their own “Flamin’ Cajun Chili” for last year’s competition.
Everyone that purchases a ticket will be automatically entered in a drawing for a 42-inch television. A lottery tree will be up for raffle. You do not have to be present to win and tickets are available to purchase before the event by calling the CADV.
All proceeds of the event will benefit CADV, serving victims of domestic and sexual violence in Camden, Miller and Morgan counties. Last year’s cook-off raised $7,000 and event organizers have set a goal to raise more than $10,000 this year. Proceeds will go towards the construction of a new facility to be able to assist more victims in the community. CADV turned away more than 40 women and children in 2011 due to the limited bed spaces at the temporary facility. The new facility is scheduled for completion in December 2012.
If you are interested in entering a team, would like more information, or tickets call Angie Fiene by calling the CADV at 573-346-9630 or visit CADV’s website at www.cadv-voc.org. The CADV is also looking for baked items for the cakewalk. Anyone interested should contact the CADV.
