Area wrestlers compete at state meet

The 2012 State Wrestling Tournament took place last weekend in Columbia.

Three area wrestlers advanced from district tournaments to participate for the state title.

Osage sent two representatives in freshman Chris Johnson (113 pounds) and senior Kyle Christenson (160). Camdenton sent one wrestler in sophomore Anthony Franicevich (126).

Christenson finished with a third-place berth from the Class 2 District 3 tourney. Johnson qualified with a fourth-place finish. Franicevich qualified with a third place finish from Class 3 District 4 competition.

Johnson (32-9) lost in the first round against a senior from Winfield, John Bobeen (44-6), by a score of 14-4. After defeating AJ Peterson from Excelsior Springs in the first round of consolation wrestlebacks by a score of 15-4, Johnson fell to Oak Grove’s junior Drake Hoffman by a score of 10-3.

Christenson entered with a 20-5 record and won his first match by pinning senior Deshaun Isaiah from Miller in the third round. He was pinned at 3:32 by senior Monterio Burton (28-3) of Mexico, sending Christenson to the consolation round for a match against senior Van Thomas of Priory (37-9). He was knocked out of the competition by a 12-7 decision in that round.

Franicevich won his first round by a 12-0 decision over senior Jared Moresi from Fort Zumwalt. He lost the next round to senior Brian Harman from Farmington by an 8-2 decision, sending him to the consolation rounds for an opportunity to wrestle back to a third-place win.

Franicevich won the next round, outscoring Nathan Kelam (freshman from Hillsboro) by 7-2 before getting knocked out by sophomore Jeff Miller of Pacific by a 3-2 decision.
